How great they are and terrible,
In unrelenting light,
Aldebaran and Sirius,
Betelgeuse and Regulus,
Rigel and Capella,
The awful stars of night.
And each a sun to dwarf the sun,
And each a sun ere life began,
And yet some small presumptuous man
Has Named them one by one.
For naming them is taming them
To help them fit the mind,
And we have called them SIRIUS,
And BETELGEUSE, and REGULUS,
RIGEL and ALDEBARAN and racked our brains to find
Their weight and girth and distances,
And blasphemy of blasphemies,
We seek to solve their mysteries
To put them in a sum.
YES we have Called the Stars of Night,
But what if they should come!
